The Culture Network, one of the larger networks within the ESSHC, invites you to offer
a proposal for a paper or a session for the 2012 Conference. The ESSHC will
take place from Wednesday April 11 up to and including April 14 2012 in Glasgow, Scotland.
This is an open call. You are free to suggest any theme for the 2010 Conference as
long as it relates to cultural history in its broadest sense.
However, please note that the networks will be especially selective again this
year since the number of possible sessions is limited. The Culture Network can accommodate
17 sessions. Papers stand a better chance of being selected if they fit together with other papers,
and the best way to ensure this is to organise a session, or a group of sessions, yourself.

How to propose a paper: Fill out the pre-registration form on
the Internet. Include an abstract of your paper (100-500 words).
Please send in your form as soon as possible, but before May 1, 2011 at the latest.
No individual may present more than one paper. However, every participant can act as a chair or
commentator in addition to presenting a paper. A participant cannot act as chair or commentator in the same session he/she is presenting a paper.
How to organise a session: Gather four speakers who each will present a paper
on a related topic, a commentator who will introduce the discussion with a prepared comment
on the papers and a chair. The roles of the session organizer, chair and commentator can be
fulfilled by the same or by different persons. Confirm participation and arrange with these
individuals the (date of) exchange of papers and the way the session will be conducted.
If possible, have one or more substitute speakers at hand in case of withdrawal of one of the speakers.
Submit the proposal for a session with a pre-registration form for each individual speaker.
The deadline for this is May 1, 2011, but please send your form as early as possible.
Contact the speakers regularly; to make sure that the preparation of the session is progressing,
as you would want it to be.
All creative proposals are welcome, as long as sessions do last not more than two hours and give ample opportunity for the participation of the audience in discussions. Session organisers should make arrangements made for the distribution of papers among participants well before the conference, in order to enable discussions.
We think that progress in Labour History is being made by analysing global developments in labour
relations and labour struggle, including the influence of these global developments on local cases.
It also remains essential to take into account besides class other constituent elements of working
class identities, like gender, ethnicity, religion, age and nationality.
At the previous network meeting (Ghent 2010), participants and organisers agreed on expanding
the traditional concept of 'labour' and of 'organised labour'. Several themes were suggested,
among others: unpaid labour; labour and war conditions; non-Socialist working class associations;
sources in labour history; work floor dynamics; (changing) working class culture; domestic service;
pre-1800 labour history. However, the Labour History Network welcomes any other session or paper
proposal dealing with all topics and periods in labour and working class history.
During the selection of proposals, the coherence of sessions will be an important criterion.
Therefore, propositions of full sessions with three or four papers will be easier to accommodate
in the conference programme than single papers.
Most sessions choose the panel format, but other types of sessions are encouraged.
We have a preference for sessions with a comparative character, geographically and/or chronologically. Also, we advise you to seek alliances with other ESSHC-networks and propose joint sessions. We heartily encourage young scholars, such as PhD and master students, to involve in organizing sessions within the Labour Network.
Proposing sessions or papers only works by pre-registering on our website.
To propose a panel session (2 hour timeslot): pre-register for 3 or 4 participants.
Add full names and addresses of all paper authors, and of a chair and/or commentator.
NB: In the case of full sessions, it is important to indicate the name of the session for
every individual paper! To propose a paper: pre-register through the conference website,
indicating 'Labour' as your network of preference. The deadline for proposing abstracts is May 1, 2011.
