Mao hovering above a crowd of Red Guards: students and pupils incited by Mao to sweep away the old party cadres 'like a tidal wave'. They are reading Mao's Collected Works. The Red Guards are Mao's main instrument in launching the Cultural Revolution. They are responsible for countless acts of violence.
