The International Social History Committee (ISHC) was founded in February 2002 and continues the activities of the Commission internationale d'histoire des mouvements sociaux et des structures sociales (1951-2002).

At present the ISHC consists of representatives of five institutes:

• Bo Stråth for the European University Institute in Florence (Italy)
• Francis Demier for the Institut d'histoire sociale in Paris (France)
• Pat Thane for the Institute of Historical Research in London (Britain)
• Klaus Tenfelde for the Institut für soziale Bewegungen in Bochum (Germany)
• Marcel van der Linden for the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam (The Netherlands)

The ISHC is an Affiliated Organization of the International Committee of Historical Sciences / Comité International des Sciences Historiques.

Sydney 2005
The 2005 world congress of this International Committee took place in Sydney, Australia, July 3-9, 2005. At the congress there were several ISHC activities:

• Workshop on Globalization and Labour Markets in the 19th and 20th Centuries on 8 July 2005
• Business Meeting on 8 July 2005. Which among other things
  1) discussed a proposal for organizational statutes (pdf 14 Kb)
  2) decided on membership applications of the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History and the Canadian Committee on Labour History
  3) elected a new board.

The ISHC also supported other socio-historical activities at the Sydney congress, especially:
Specialized Theme Session 21 on Models of Welfare State Formation in the Global Context. Full papers online available.

Contact
At the moment the ISHC is based in Europe. The Committee wants to change this as soon as possible. As a first step it organized a conference on the future of social history at the university of Campinas, Brazil, on 14-15 August 2003, with the support of the local Department of History (Prof. Michael Hall).
