Het Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (IISG) is het grootste documentatie- en onderzoekscentrum ter wereld op het terrein van de sociale geschiedenis. Sinds zijn oprichting in 1935 zet het instituut zich in voor het verzamelen, behouden en ter beschikking stellen van het erfgoed van sociale bewegingen wereldwijd. Het instituut is onafhankelijk en betrouwbaar en daardoor een natuurlijke bewaarplaats voor het dikwijls bedreigde culturele erfgoed van de arbeidersbeweging en andere emancipatorische groepen en stromingen. De onderzoeksafdeling van het instituut richt zich op de geschiedenis van arbeidsverhoudingen en organiseert internationale projecten op dit terrein. De verzameling (archieven, bibliotheek- en audiovisueel materiaal) beslaat ruim 50 km planklengte. Het IISG is een instituut van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW).
De Stichting IISG is door het College van Bestuur van de Universiteit van Amsterdam bevoegd verklaard tot vestiging van een bijzondere leerstoel in de Faculteit der Maatschappij- en Gedragswetenschappen. De Faculteit der Maatschappij- en Gedragswetenschappen (FMG) van de Universiteit van Amsterdam is de grootste onderwijs- en onderzoeksinstelling op haar gebied in Nederland. De Afdeling Sociologie en Antropologie is een van de afdelingen binnen de FMG. Het onderzoek en onderwijs worden verzorgd door aparte instituten. Het College Sociale Wetenschappen (CSW) is verantwoordelijk voor het bachelor-onderwijs, de Graduate School Social Sciences (GSSS) voor het master- en PhD-onderwijs en het Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) voor het onderzoek. Het AISSR is het grootste onderzoeksinstituut op het gebied van de sociale wetenschappen van Nederland en wellicht zelfs van heel Europa. Het onderzoek en onderwijs worden gekenmerkt door breedte en verscheidenheid. De programmagroep Moving Matters (antropologie en sociologie van ontwikkeling) besteedt uitvoerig aandacht aan de sociale gevolgen van historische en hedendaagse mobiliteit.

Bijzonder Hoogleraar Kinderarbeid, in het bijzonder de historische en sociale aspecten

De bijzonder hoogleraar Kinderarbeid draagt verantwoordelijkheid voor het opbouwen en ondersteunen van onderwijs en onderzoek op het gebied van wereldwijde kinderarbeid in vergelijkend sociaalhistorisch perspectief. Zij/hij wordt ondergebracht bij de afdeling Sociologie en Antropologie van de Faculteit der Maatschappij- en Gedragswetenschappen.
Werkzaamheden
- Opzetten en verrichten van empirisch onderzoek vanuit vergelijkend sociaalhistorisch en geografisch perspectief naar kinderarbeid;
- het creëren van samenwerkingsverbanden met andere onderzoekers, binnen het Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) en daarbuiten;
- het ontwikkelen van academisch leiderschap in dit specifieke onderzoeksveld;
- het verrichten van onderwijs op bachelor, master en PhD niveau, voor zover dat in redelijkheid binnen de gestelde tijd kan worden verwacht;
- supervisie van promovendi;
- verwerven van onderzoeksfondsen;
- het opzetten van een internationaal, interdisciplinair netwerk van onderzoekers om gezamenlijk onderzoek en publicaties te entameren;
- het zichtbaar maken van de problematiek van kinderarbeid voor een groot maatschappelijk publiek.
Profiel
- Excellente onderzoekskwaliteiten, blijkend uit een academisch proefschrift, boekpublicaties en artikelen in internationale, peer reviewed tijdschriften;
- expertise op het terrein van de kinderarbeid in internationaal vergelijkend historisch en sociaaleconomisch perspectief, met een duidelijke affiniteit voor global labour history en ontwikkelingssociologie;
- goede trackrecord op het gebied van onderwijs, met name het begeleiden van promovendi op dit terrein;
- goede trackrecord op het gebied van fondsenwerving;
- sterke internationale inbedding;
- goed in staat internationale onderzoeks- en publicatieprojecten op te zetten en te begeleiden.

Aanstelling
Het hoogleraarschap leidt niet tot een dienstverband bij de Stichting IISG of bij de UvA en kent geen bezoldiging. Wel wordt per jaar een vergoeding ter beschikking gesteld als tegemoetkoming in de kosten die met de uitoefening van de taken gemoeid zijn.

The International Institute of Social History (IISH) is the world's largest documentation and research centre in the field of social history. Since its foundation in 1935, the institute has dedicated itself to the collection, preservation and availability of the heritage of social movements worldwide. The institute is independent and reliable, which makes it a natural depository of the frequently threatened cultural heritage of the labour movement and other emancipatory groups and currents. The research department of the institute focuses on the history of labour relations and organizes international projects in this field. The collection (archives, library and audio-visual materials) takes up well over 30 miles of shelf room. The International Institute of Social History is an institute that comes under the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

Digital Infrastructure Department (DI)
The department runs an operational digital infrastructure for social history collections and research consisting of 50 websites, 18 strategic applications and several storage systems that manage currently over 300 TB of digital collections and scientific data.
The department works on development and implementation, which are of strategic importance to the Institute, such as:
- Trusted Digital Repository. Digital files from private archives, scientific datasets and digitized collections (text and audiovisual material) are stored in a secure and managed repository. We are working together with practitioners in the field to implement practical solutions for digital preservation and long term access.
- Metadata production systems, including the automated library system which manages up to 2 million records.
- Search platform. Data aggregation and search and discovery services for data collections of the IISG and sister institutions across the world in the field of social and economic history.
- Collaboratory platform for historical research. Collecting, sharing and enriching datasets for research in an international collaborative environment.
These products are developed in the context of multi-partner projects (such as the EU-funded HOPE project). To strengthen the DI department we are looking for an enthusiastic, inquisitive, pro-active and communicatively strong individual.
Function information
As a system administrator you work together with colleague system administrators and developers to maintain the infrastructure (fysical and virtual servers, network components, storage, security, etc.), and to support the products that run on the infrastructure, including the technical documentation. The most important part of your work consists of the standard duties of a system administrator, network administrator, security administrator and technical support. Other duties may include scripting or light bash programming, project management for systems-related projects, supervising hired technical staff and contributing to the technical requirements and technical design of software development projects. Together with the development team you analyse architectural constraints, evaluate options and contribute to the design (through proof-of-concepts) and implementation of systems. You build safe connectivity between systems. Also testing is a very important activity (performance, load, stress-testing, etc).
In carrying out your tasks and responsibilities you make use of open source products and open source tools. You give support to end-users of systems and to application administrators and developers. We expect that you can produce clear documentation and that you will review documentation of your colleagues. You are familiar with ITIL based best practices and trouble-shooting methodologies. You are expected to produce strong proposals for improvement of the work processes at the operational level. To perform your job well, you must demonstrate a blend of technical skills and responsibility.

Job requirements
- A relevant degree in Computer Science or related discipline
- In-depth knowledge and experience with virtual infrastructures (Citrix XenServer VMware)
- In-depth knowledge and experience with Open Source Applications(Apache, OpenLdap,Tomcat)
- In-depth knowledge of Linux operating systems (CentOS, Ubuntu LTS)
- Working knowledge of Windows operating systems (Windows 2008, Windows 7)
- Working knowledge of databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
- Working knowledge of network principles and network components (Cisco, Dell, Fortinet)
- Working knowledge of IT service management approaches (ITIL)
- Demonstrated experience with problem-solving and trouble-shooting methodologies and knowledge of diagram drawing tools (e.g. Visio)
- A minimum of 3 years' experience of working in projects
- A minimum of 7 years' working experience
- Customer oriented, analytical, result-oriented, precise, pro-active, inventive, hands-on-mentality
- Can function independently and in teams
- The ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
- Good communicative skills in English (spoken en written)
Contract and salary
This is a tenure contract at the KNAW-IISG, with a 2-month period of probation. The gross salary per month depends on relevant work experience with a minimum of € 2492,- and maximum of € 3.422, - (scale 9 CAO-Dutch Universities). The IISG offers an extensive package of fringe benefits, such as 8,3% year-end bonus, 8% holiday pay, a good pension scheme, 6 weeks holiday on an annual basis and the possibility to buy or sell vacation hours.
