Zhang Huaijiang (1922-1990) was born in Wenling,
Zhejiang Province. He taught himself to make woodcuts in 1938, and in
1943 he entered the art school of the South East United National
University. In 1946, he graduated from the Shanghai Art School, and a
year later he joined the People's Liberation Army.
While in the army, he produced (propaganda) art and taught. In 1950, he
took up a teaching position at the Shanghai Branch of the Central Art
Academy, and at the Woodcut Section of the Zhejiang Art Academy.

Zhang was known mainly for his black-and-white woodcuts.
