10 Denis Diderot

In 1767 Diderot was depicted by the society painter Louis-Michel van Loo (the oil painting is presently on display at the Louvre). Infinitely critical, he warned that none of the portraits of him were true likenesses. Later a colour engraving was made from a cut-out according to the portrait by Pierre-Michel Alix (1762-1817), who depicted countless leaders from the French Revolution as well.
