Original photograph of Karl Marx (1818-1883), taken in Hannover in 1867, the year that the first volume of Das Kapital was published. After learning about Hegelian philosophy and French socialism, Marx became engaged in the revolutionary movement and the Communist League. Once the turmoil of 1848 was over, he spent years in London formulating his theory on the nature and development of capitalism.
