18 Friedrich Engels

Original photograph of Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), taken in Hamburg in 1862. As the son of a textile manufacturer from Barmen, Engels learned about the ins and outs of trade and industry in Germany and England at an early age. In 1842 he met Marx, who became a lifelong friend, and whom he supported financially. After Marx’s death, Engels arranged to have his friend’s writings published, editing the second and third volumes of Das Kapital, which were published in 1885 and 1894.
