197, 198 Elections in Burma

Since the 1988 uprising Burma has been under military rule. In 1990 elections resulted in a victory for the National League for Democracy under Aung San Suu Kyi (*1945), but the army cancelled the results and established a dictatorship. The painter Htein Lin (*1966) was imprisoned from 1998 to 2004 and painted 58th Birthday there in 2003, a portrait of Suu Kyi. The other painting, which he produced somewhat later, depicts in Burmese script the Pali formula of the nine virtues of the Buddha.
