21 At the guillotine

This copy of the pamphlet was personally dedicated by Cloots to Camille Desmoulins (1760-1794), a friend of Georges Danton. At the time neither of the two men had the slightest idea that they would share the same fate. Two weeks after the giver, the recipient would die at the guillotine as well (on 24 March and 5 April 1794). In his speech against Desmoulins, Saint-Just had mocked the view that the Revolution devoured its children; then on 28 July his turn came as well.
