28 Liberal opposition
In the revolution year 1830 Robert Blum (1807-1848), a manual worker and writer from Cologne, became interested in politics. He became a leader of the liberal opposition movement in Saxony and in 1848 became a delegate for that state to the national parliament in Frankfurt. When revolution broke out in Vienna as well in October, he went there but was arrested and executed by a firing squad on 19 November 1848 – a turning point seen by many as the end of a purely political reform movement.
