58 Rerum Novarum
In the Netherlands the Catholic labour unions were fairly strong. One of the oldest such organizations was the Nederlandsche Rooms-Katholieke Volksbond, with local chapters throughout the country. This banner is from the Amersfoort chapter, which was founded in 1894, undoubtedly inspired by the papal encyclical Rerum novarum (1891), invoked here with pride. In 1982 the Catholic and social-democratic labour-union federations merged to form the present Federatie van Nederlandse vakverenigingen (FNV).
