68 Sexual reformers

Many causes now labelled as ‘progressive’ divided liberal and social circles in the nineteenth and sometimes still in the twentieth century. One was the neo-Malthusian appeal for birth control, which many Marxists mistrusted. In France the anarchists Eugène Humbert (1870-1944) and Jeanne Rigaudin (1890-1986), who established their organization Génération Consciente to dispense information about family planning and distribute contraceptives, were regularly sentenced to prison for these activities. This ‘anatomical plate’ is from around 1910.
