72 An anti-smoking sorcerer

Political concern was increasingly commonplace among artists from the end of the eighteenth century and became almost standard with expressionists, futurists, dadaists, and surrealists in the twentieth century. Robert Jasper Grootveld (1932-2009) already frequented the artistic cafes on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein by the mid 1950s and achieved notoriety in the 1960s for his opposition to smoking and later for his ‘happenings’ on Amsterdam’s Spui against consumerism. From 1965 the provos livened up these events.
