Prof. Dr Erik-Jan Zürcher
Profile
Erik-Jan Zürcher (Leiden, 1953) studied Turkish (with Arabic, Persian and Modern History as minors) at the University of Leiden, where he also did his Ph.D. in 1984. His thesis, The Unionist Factor, concerned the role of the Young Turk Committee of Union and Progress in the Turkish independence struggle after World War I. In 1991 a sequel appeared in the shape of Political Opposition in the Early Turkish Republic.
From 1977 to 1997 Zürcher worked in the University of Nijmegen, first as a lecturer of Turkish, later as a senior lecturer in History of the Middle East. From 1989 to 1999 he headed the Turkish department of the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. From 1993 to 1997 he held a private chair of Turkish History in the University of Amsterdam funded by the Foundation IISG. Since 1997 he has held the chair of Turkish Studies in the University of Leiden.
His main research interest is the political and social history of the late Ottoman Empire and the early Turkish Republic. His Turkey. A modern history (first published in 1993) is widely used as textbook in universities in the U.S.A., the U.K, the Netherlands and Turkey. It has been translated into Dutch, Turkish, Greek, Italian, Arabic, Indonesian and Hebrew. Monographs and textbooks apart, Zürcher has edited or co-edited five collections on the social and political history of the late Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey.
Zürcher has been invited as guest lecturer at SUNY Binghamton, Louisville KY, OSU Columbus, Minneapolis, Oxford (St. Anthony's), London (SOAS), Durham, Manchester, Bamberg, Munich, Bochum, Naples, Paris (EHESS), Berne, Zürich, Louvain, Ghent, Istanbul (Koç, Bilgi) and Ankara (Bilkent). In 2006 he gave the Hamilton Gibb memorial lecture at Harvard University and in 2008 he teaches one day a week as guest professor in the University of Antwerp.
Over the past years Zürcher has been actively involved in consultations on Turkey's accession to the European Union, among other things by writing the expert opinion on the question whether Islam would be an impediment to Turkish accession for the Dutch EU presidency. In June 2005 he was awarded the Medal of High Distinction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey. In 2006 and 2007 Zürcher was closely involved in the founding of the Dutch Higher Education Institute (NIHA) in Ankara and the Turkey Institute in The Hague. He chairs the academic committees of both institutions. Zürcher was appointed director of the IISH on 1 April 2008.
