Esperanto, the artificial language created by dr Zamenhof, was especially popular in the labour movement because it agreed with the ideals of international brotherhood. The railway workers already had their own international Esperanto federation in 1909, the "Internacia Fervojista Esperanto Federacio (IFEF)", with the slogan: "The rails connect the countries, Esperanto the peoples". The first conference after the Second World War in 1948 in Amsterdam was intended as a kind of re-founding meeting. As part of the festivities a street in Amsterdam was renamed Dr. Zamenhofstreet in the presence of the Danish IFEF chairman M. Jacobsen.
