Azerbaijan Apart

Design E.M. Mirzoev, 1938

BG E11/935

Stalins new Constitution in 1936 made Azerbaijan a separate soviet republic. In 1922 it had been forged together with Georgia and Armenia to one megarepublic Trancaucasia. Posters from the republics of the Caucasus in this period are extremely rare. The 22 Azeri posters at the IISH are from 1934-1941 and were designed by local artists who were clearly familiar with the works of their colleagues in Moscow. The poster shown here was designed by Mirzoev and commemorates the Constitution of 5 December 1936.
