After the death of model soldier Lei Feng, Chairman Mao called upon the nation to "learn from Lei Feng." There are many myths about the cause of Lei Fengs death.
On 6 March 1997, however, all these stories turned out to be wrong. It was reported that retiree Qiao Anshan drove a truck into a pole, knocking it over onto Lei Feng and killing him. Mr. Qiao declared: "In the mortuary, I took his hand and I just wanted to follow him. He was my best brother, my closest friend, but I was the one who drove that truck."
