Socialist Cigars

Box of cigars with portraits of socialists, 1963
K21/117
The Socialist International, founded in 1951 in Frankfurt am Main, was a loose federation of social-democratic parties. It saw itself as successor of the Labour and Socialist International (LSI/SAI) 1923-1940.
By celebrating its 100th anniversary in 1963 (9-12 September), the Socialist International traced its roots back to the founding of the Allgemeine Deutsche Arbeiterverein (ADAV) in 1863. This box of cigars was presented to the participants of the 8th conference in Amsterdam. The cigar bands show famous socialists from 100 years socialist international: Marx, Engels, Adler, Jaures, Bebel, Branting, Troelstra, Hardie, De Paepe, and Bakunin.
