Red Soldiers in Hungary

In the aftermath of the First World War, communists established a soviet republic in Hungary under the leadership of Bela Kun. The rightist opposition, helped by Czechs and Romanians, tries to take it down. The commander of the Red troops sends a telegraph message about the fight: 'wir haben szerencs und leva genommen. aus szerencs bin ich soeben eingetroffen. unsere truppen fortsetzen auf ganzer linie ihr vord[r]ingen. tschechen und rumaenen fuehlen unsere ueberlegenheit und zie[h]en sic[h] auf ganzen linie zurueck. wir for[t]setzen verfolgen auf energischeste. ich kann stimmung unserer roten soldaten nicht beschreiben. sie koennten selbst auf einem maiausflug nicht in besserer stimmung sein als sie in kampf gegen soeldner der internationalen gegenrevolution an tag legen?.' etc. ["We have taken Szerencs and Leva. I have just arrived from Szerencs. Our troops are advancing all along the line. Czechs and Romanians sense that we are stronger and retreat everywhere across the line. We are advancing on all fronts. I cannot describe the mood of our Red soldiers. Even during a May Day excursion it could not be better than now, in their struggle against the forces of international counterrevolution."]
