Czar Nicolas in Simplicissimus 11 September 1917
BG C12/918
More than a million Russians have already perished in the Great War when the February Revolution of 1917 terminates czar Nicolas' regime and he is exiled to Jekaterinenburg. The German satirical magazine `Simplicissimus' on 11 September 1917 has a suggestion for Nicolas, who feels lost now and carries his regalia under his arm: "Welcome in Siberia! Caesar, those who have died by your doing salute you!" Separate peace negotiations between the Russians and the Germans start in Devember 1917. Czar Nicolas and his family are executed by the Bolsheviks on 16 July 1918.
