Travelling with Captain Cook

List of paintings of a Brussels art dealer that Zimmermann brought to India in 1787.

Arch. Vollmar nr. A23

Captain Cook's third and last expedition starts on 12 July 1776 with the departure of the 'Resolution' from Plymouth. The German sailor Johann Heinrich Zimmermann (1741-1805) is aboard. In 1781 Zimmermann is the first to publish a report on this unfortunate journey that ended in Cook's death on Hawaii. This book brought Zimmermann professional benefit, as can be seen in the papers of this studious sailor. His papers were part of the Von Vollmar archive at the IISH. Von Vollmar's relationship with Zimmermann is not clear. Zimmermann was asked by the Russian czar to organize an expedition to the South Pacific, and he travelled to India to sell paintings on behalf of an art dealer in Brussels. Among these was a work by Rembrandt priced at 36 guilders.
