Together with the Lausanne conference of the First International, a conference of the League for Peace and Liberty was hold at Geneva in the same month. This 'bourgeois' and pacifist meeting in September 1867 was attended by well known Europeans, like Garibaldi and Victor Hugo. The anarchist Michael Bakunin was also present and tried to win influence in the international socialist society through the League. Marx and his friends saw nothing in the League. In their opinion the workers first had to fight oppression and after that they could think of pacifism. A year later Bakunin already left the League after having been accused of communism.
