The Viennese 1848 October Revolution started with the lynching of the minister of war. A rebellious crowd led by students tried to prevent the imperial army from going to Hungary on a pacification mission. The Emperor Ferdinand fled on 7 October, and later the Congress sought safety outside the city. Fighting went on and culminated in the siege and assault of Vienna by the imperial army at the end of October. The leaders of the rebellion were executed and 2000 others were killed.
