Index of Prohibited Books Cancelled

First edition La nouvelle Heloise, 1761

Cal 2003/4017 X

The Index of Prohibited Books (Index Librorum Prohibitorum) existed for over four hundred years when it was cancelled by Pope Paul VI on June 14, 1966. Catholics could now read Jean Jacques Rousseau, the Enlightenment author who had repeatedly pointed out that book reading had an unfavourable influence on education. His bestseller La nouvelle Heloise had been on the Index since it was published in 1761. The first edition of this epistolary novel about two lovers in a village at the foot of the Alps was published in Amsterdam by Marc-Michel Rey.
