In Germany nude swimming used to be tolerated in certain reserved areas, but in the DDR it was officially prohibited in July 1956. The numerous lovers of "Freikörperkultur" were now exposed to strict inspections by bathhouse superintendents. One of them explains: "This new prohibition is consistent with our new social order. On the beach, everybody can come and see everything. Nudism is a threat to public safety and it harms our workers. It is a life style of intellectuals and artists, not of workers."
