On 17 February 1981 the Pope's visit to Pakistan was headline news for the Pakistani newspaper The Muslim. On its masthead this English language newspaper has the motto: 'The press and the nation rise and fall together.' The paper seems to have linked its rise to President Zia al-Haq, who also welcomed the Pope during his 180-minute stop-over in Karachi. As The Muslim photographers did not attend the mass that the Pope held in the National Stadium, the front page photo was taken from the television broadcast.
