17 December 1979
A Kurdish Robert Ludlum

2005/5201
The German journalist Lissy Schmidt published on Turkish issues. She sympathized with the Kurds and their struggle for freedom. In 1984 she settled in Istanbul as freelance correspondent. The Kurds had limited rights in Turkey. Till 1991 it was even forbidden to speak or write in Kurdish. This book from Schmidts collection is a dissertation on the Kurdish language, defended on 17 December 1979. It was disguised as a book by Robert Ludlum, probably to be smuggled into Turkey. Lissy Schmidt was shot dead in 1994, along with her Kurdish bodyguard, near the city of Suleymania (Iraq).
