In 1951 Vinoba Bhave, a follower of Ghandi, started his peace march on foot through the violence-torn region of Telangana (India). On April 18, in a meeting with the villagers at Pochampalli, the poor told him that they needed land to make a living. When Vinoba asked the villagers what to do about this problem, a landlord got up and showed his willingness to give 100 acres of land. The non-violent Bhoodan (Gift of the Land) movement was launched.
