The Dutch in Japan

Japanese spotting a Dutch ship, print

"De Liefde" (Love) was the first Dutch ship to reach Japan on 19 April 1600. This was the beginning of an intensive trade relationship. For centuries the Dutch were the only Westerners allowed in Japan. More than 650 ships of the Dutch East Indies Company visited Japan between 1600 and 1853. A special collection of Japanese prints at the NEHA/IISH portrays this special relationship.
