Women of Burma Day

Since 1997 Burmese activists and their supporters have celebrated June 19, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's birthday, as Women of Burma Day, a day to express solidarity and support for women resisting the military regime in Burma. The day was not recognized by the regime, who declared its own Myanmar Women's Day on 3 July. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the popular opposition party NLD, was placed under house arrest in July 1989. After six years of confinement, in the course of which she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1991), she was released in July 1995. Early in 2001 she was again placed under de facto house arrest.
