Surprise from the Middle East

In July, there is usually nothing much to report about in the media. In 1958 however, Egyptian president Nasser prepares "an unpleasant surprise for cucumber time." As his pursuit of a strong Arabian commonwealth has been reinforced by a new sympathetic regime in Iraq, he intervenes in the Treaty of Baghdad. The Baghdad Treaty (1955) was an alliance of Arabian countries that favoured western oil interests since it had been inspired by western heads of state. They are now endangered, according to cartoonist L. Jordaan in Vrij Nederland, July 19, 1958.
