The British army experiments with dog traction for transporting machine guns, reports The Illustrated War News of 20 January 1915. The method has been copied from the Belgian milkman with his dog cart. According to the news magazine, dogs are an integral part of modern warfare. The German Army includes 6,000 German shepherds. The tracker dogs are good at finding casualties in remote places. Others keep guard at night, watch prisoners, or go on reconnaissance patrol. The shepherds among the dogs excel in ambulance services, carrying boxes of bandages and medicine on their flanks.
