March of the Sledge Hammers

Das Reichsbanner, Magdeburg, 20 February 1932

ZF 1141

Following the National-Socialist SA, German social-democrats established a paramilitary organization: Reichsbanner Schwarz Rot Gold. In addition, the Reichsbanner, the SPD, and the trade union congress founded the Eiserne Front (Iron Front) in 1932. The main task of the Iron Front was to spread propaganda against fascism and communism. The mottoes and symbols of the Iron Front were very similar to those of its enemy. Das Reichsbanner of 20 February 1932 came out with a 'Song of the Sledgehammers' to be sung at a 'formidable marching pace'. Eagles are scattered throughout the newspaper.
