In 1697 France on the one side and the Grand Alliance (England, the Netherlands, the German states) on the other side decided to end their war and begin peace negotiations. The French negotiators stayed in The Hague and the allied in Delft. In between lay Huis ter Nieuwburg in Ryswick where the negotiations took place.
After a few months a treaty was signed on 20 September. They agreed to restore the situation of 1679, before the war. More over the French would support the Dutch stadholder William III as king of England. This was the last time the Dutch Republic played an important role in European politics. After the death of William III the Netherlands lost their international position.
