The Austrian economist and Marxist Otto Neurath took refuge in England at the outbreak of the Second World War and died in there on 22 December 1945. Neurath contributed to the Bavarian Council Republic in 1919, but he owes his fame to the system of pictorial statistics ISOTYPE which he developed together with Gerd Arntz. ISOTYPE (International System of Typographic Picture Education) casts quantitative information on social trends in telling icons. The pictorial statistics took shape in Vienna, where Neurath established the Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum in 1923.
