World Youth Solidarity with Cyprus

Alongside the people and youth of Cyprus. 24th october, world day of solidarity action with the people and youth of Cyprus
WFDY, 1964

Int 1575/85

In March and April 1964 severe fighting between Greeks and Turks on Cyprus broke out. The Cypriot government decided to establish a National Guard to maintain order. The Turks, however, thought the guard was too sympathetic to the Greeks. Turkey threatened to invade the island to protect the Turkish inhabitants. Notwithstanding a warning of the American president, in August Turkish fighters attacked Greek troops on the island.
For the communist-inspired World Federation of Democratic Youth the people of Cyprus were a victim of (American) imperialism. At their congress they called for a "world day to show solidarity with the people and youth of Cyprus" on 24 October. The texts and photos in the above pamphlet had to show that the common people got along fine together and that the enemy was elsewhere.
