The first issue of The Black Panther, official news organ of the Black Panther Party, was published on 25 April 1967. Black Panthers patrolled the American black ghettos to protect their fellows from police harassment.
The party platform contained both radical and moderate points: self defense, black power, decent housing and education, justice, and peace. 'Power to the People' and 'Die for the People' were appealing Panther slogans. The party was decimated by police bullets and the imprisonment of its leaders, and had effectively ceased to operate by the early 1980s.
