President Reagan's "Urgent Fury" operation, when 5000 American marines landed on Grenada, a Caribbean island of 340 square kilometres, took place on 25 October 1983. The invasion was intended to drive away the pro-Cuban regime. That a few hundred US citizens living in Grenada were said to be in acute danger was the argument for the American intervention. The international solidarity movement that had long supported Grenada because of Maurice Bishop's Marxist government now protested with fury against the American invasion.
