At the end of the nineteenth century the developing mine industry, public services and factories in Chile led to the formation of working class parties. The Partido Obrero Francisco Bilbao founded in 1898 was one of the first. In 1901 it changed its name to Partido Socialista and published a program and statutes. The photo above of the Socialist Party was made during one of its first meetings. The photographer Alejandro Meneses O., working for the journals Pluma y Lápiz en Vespertinas, donated the picture on 25 December 1902.
