The news carried in Geillustreerd Politienieuws (Illustrated Police News) of 29 January 1882 is very familiar. A soldier near Cherbourg stabbed a maidservant from a nearby farm thirty times and robbed her of one franc. In the German town of Cronenberg the parents of a small family killed themselves and their little daughter. They felt remorse for a theft they had committed earlier. They left their only remaining son of 16 a Bible, a song book and a letter explaining what had motivated them. A father of four children in the Dutch village of Blaricum strangled his wife.
