The Dutch secretary Imelda Verrept worked for seven years at NATO headquarters. In 1980 she moved to the GDR and unveiled secret NATO documents. In an interview on East German television on April 29 she explained that NATO had already decided in 1977 to place nuclear missiles. This was a piquant detail in the discussion about placing cruise missiles in Western Europe. NATO had always claimed that its disadvantageous weapons position with regard to the East Block in 1979 motivated the placement.
