The Italian crime fighter and socialist Enrico Ferri (1856-1929) was known as the 'Scourge of the Camorra'. Ferri was one of the founders of modern criminology. He rejected a legal system based on retaliation and punishment and advocated preventive crime fighting instead. Ferri was invited by his fellow socialists Floor and Mathilde Wibaut to come to Holland and read some papers. He presented them with a portrait of his made in Reggio Emilia and dated Middelburg 29 september 1901.
